Joan Hansen

Artist’s Statement

As artists, we have the opportunity to express our unique thoughts and passions through the medium of our choice. Interwoven through my work are threads of organic line and luminous color. The organic lines symbolize my love of nature, and the luminous color expresses my continuing passion for the vibrancy of life. It intrigues me to capture and paint the elusive choreography in nature’s eternal dance of light and shadow.

Joan takes a laidback approach to producing art, photography, and digital art, and tries not to think of it as ‘work.’ She enjoys the creative process, and says she is honored to be associated with artists at COAL, and in particular, photographers like Charles Dozer, whose work she greatly admires.

Raised in Europe, and moving frequently, my art was the only thing that always went with me, as much never fit into a suitcase. Therefore, I learned to pull from memories. My fundamental interest is to create works that call for the participation of the audience, extend one’s natural curiosities, share in the joy of the process of development, and evoke basic human emotion. I believe it is the job of a true creative artist to always deepen the mystery of the story. Art without emotion is not art.

I love to find and photograph that elusive image that is gone in an instant. The kind of thing that makes most people say, “If I only had a camera with me.” Well, I do have mine with me, and more often than not, I get the shot.
