Artist Bio

Karen Crowell – PORTRAIT / LANDSCAPE ARTIST Born and raised in Southern California, Karen has loved to draw since childhood. She remembers sitting for hours at her Grandparent’s table drawing with colored pencils her uncle, a student at UCLA, let her use. During her student years, she would do drawings for other students’ projects in geography and biology. (In exchange for not having to do dissecting) After the birth of her third daughter, Karen went back to college as an Art Major. She attended Cerritos Community College and earned her BFA from Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. At Art Center, she majored in Advertising Illustration and Fine Art Painting under the tutelage of Lorser Feitelson. Karen worked as Assistant Art Director at KTLA television in Hollywood, then Senior Art Director in the Graphic Design department for a large commercial printer. She left her art and painting career behind while she established her own company as a print broker. In 2008, she closed her company to pursue her art full time. Karen lives with her husband, Bob, in Vista, CA, and is involved with several art groups. She has recently discovered painting desert scenes in the South West. Her work can be seen at the COAL Gallery in Carlsbad, CA where she has won numerous awards, and at The Fallbrook Art Association Gallery and the San Clemente Art Association Gallery. Being born in Germany I was surrounded by the Woodcut Prints of Albrecht Durer, Kathie Kollwitz, Ernst Barlach, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Franz Marc, just to name a few. As they did, I use special woodcut tools and shun electrical tools to stay true to the tradition.

Art has been woven into my life since childhood, when my father would sit my siblings and me around the kitchen table with a bowl of fruit to paint. From those early sessions, I carried forward his love of art into a lifelong exploration of form, color, and expression.

My subject matter has always been eclectic, from the Classics and the Renaissance period to science fiction, fantasy, nature, and sports. If there is one common thread in my work, it is humanity and the spiritual essence of all life.
