Artist Bio

Karen Crowell – PORTRAIT / LANDSCAPE ARTIST Born and raised in Southern California, Karen has loved to draw since childhood. She remembers sitting for hours at her Grandparent’s table drawing with colored pencils her uncle, a student at UCLA, let her use. During her student years, she would do drawings for other students’ projects in geography and biology. (In exchange for not having to do dissecting) After the birth of her third daughter, Karen went back to college as an Art Major. She attended Cerritos Community College and earned her BFA from Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. At Art Center, she majored in Advertising Illustration and Fine Art Painting under the tutelage of Lorser Feitelson. Karen worked as Assistant Art Director at KTLA television in Hollywood, then Senior Art Director in the Graphic Design department for a large commercial printer. She left her art and painting career behind while she established her own company as a print broker. In 2008, she closed her company to pursue her art full time. Karen lives with her husband, Bob, in Vista, CA, and is involved with several art groups. She has recently discovered painting desert scenes in the South West. Her work can be seen at the COAL Gallery in Carlsbad, CA where she has won numerous awards, and at The Fallbrook Art Association Gallery and the San Clemente Art Association Gallery. She has attended workshops with such well-respected artists as Daniel Greene – Oil Janine Salzman – Oil Don Andrews – Watercolor Milford Zornes – Watercolor Ben Young – Oil Landscapes Jeffery Watts – Oil Portraits John Cosby – Plein Air Oil.

Joan takes a laidback approach to producing art, photography, and digital art, and tries not to think of it as ‘work.’ She enjoys the creative process, and says she is honored to be associated with artists at COAL, and in particular, photographers like Charles Dozer, whose work she greatly admires.
