Cheryl Ehlers

Artist’s Statement

Raised in Europe and moving often, art became the one constant I always carry with me. Creating from memory, my work invites audience participation, sparks curiosity, and celebrates the joy of discovery. I seek to evoke fundamental human emotion. I believe it is the artist’s role to deepen the mystery of the story—because art without emotion is not art.

My subject matter has always been eclectic, from the Classics and the Renaissance period to science fiction, fantasy, nature, and sports. If there is one common thread in my work, it is humanity and the spiritual essence of all life.

Art has been woven into my life since childhood, when my father would sit my siblings and me around the kitchen table with a bowl of fruit to paint. From those early sessions, I carried forward his love of art into a lifelong exploration of form, color, and expression.

Being born in Germany I was surrounded by the Woodcut Prints of Albrecht Durer, Kathie Kollwitz, Ernst Barlach, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Franz Marc, just to name a few. As they did, I use special woodcut tools and shun electrical tools to stay true to the tradition.
